Michael Raper writes contemporary fantasy rooted in history, humanity, and the enduring sense of wonder that comes from discovering there is still mystery left in the world. His work blends magic, historical depth, and deeply human relationships, focusing not only on extraordinary events, but on the ordinary people changed by them. Influenced by both classic fantasy and historical fiction, his stories explore themes of loneliness, friendship, mentorship, sacrifice, and the ways people slowly find their way back to life after loss.
Before turning seriously to fiction, Michael served for twelve years as an M1 Abrams tank crewman in the United States Army, an experience that shaped both his discipline and his understanding of teamwork, leadership, and quiet resilience under pressure. He later built a career as a program evaluator, statistician, consultant, and has been an adjunct professor for 10 years.
These experiences sharpened the research-driven and grounded approach that defines much of his writing. Whether exploring ancient history, folklore, or modern settings touched by the supernatural, he strives to make even the most fantastical elements feel believable and emotionally real.
He views books as old friends and his favorites include Watership Down from Richard Adams, The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, The Lords of Discipline by Pat Conroy, the Redwall series by Brian Jacques, the Aubrey/Maturin series by Patrick O’Brian, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, and anything and everything about Roman history.
When he is not writing, Michael enjoys hiking, painting miniatures, reading history and fantasy, and spending time with his wife of more than three decades and their family in Greensboro, North Carolina. He is also a die-hard, life-long Green Bay Packers fan.
His debut novel, The Magister and the Librarian, is the first book in The Magister’s Legacy series.
